Regional Consultation on South and Southeast Asia in Global Health Governance

The Centre for Social and Economic Progress (CSEP), in partnership with United Nations University- International Institute for Global Health (UNU-IIGH), hosted a two-day expert Regional Consultation on South and Southeast Asia in Global Health Governance (GHG) under the aegis of The Asian Collective for Health Systems. The event brought together representatives from Sri Lanka, India, Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, alongside other regional experts and practitioners.

The consultation sought to understand what the region needs from global and regional health institutions and how Asian countries can better shape evolving governance frameworks.

Over two days, participants examined the gaps and opportunities in regional and global health cooperation, financing challenges, and how geopolitical shifts are influencing health collaboration. Speakers discussed how to better contribute to and improve the system of global health governance to ensure that South and South-East Asian needs and perspectives are better represented and incorporated within global health governance mechanisms. The consultation also included a SWOT analysis of the current GHG and regional health governance (RHG) architecture.

The consultation will feed into ongoing research conducted jointly by UNU-IIGH and CSEP, which explores how Asian countries can engage more effectively in global and regional health governance in a shifting geopolitical environment.
